Holle baby formulas stand out for their clean, simple ingredients and minimally processed recipes that deliver a natural and balanced diet to little ones. Each organic formula is meticulously crafted to be as close to breast milk as possible, delivering high-quality nutrients that help babies grow and thrive.
Holle offers a diverse range of organic baby formulas, including those based on cow milk, A2 cow milk, and goat milk, all available in several country-specific versions catering to various dietary needs and preferences. To support your baby throughout their entire feeding journey, Holle offers infant formula for newborns, follow-on formulas for babies at weaning age, and toddler formula for little ones 12 months and above.
The building blocks of every wholesome Holle formula are a blend of powdered organic milk, organic vegetable oils, essential vitamins and minerals such as folic acid, vitamin K, vitamin C, and essential fatty acids for a well-rounded recipe that elevates your little one’s nutrition.
With a commitment to purity at the forefront of the brand’s values, each and every Holle formula is proudly certified European organic, and most also hold an additional Demeter biodynamic certification—the strictest private organic certification globally! Next, we’ll take a closer look at what opting for organic nutrition means for your child.
Europe is widely recognized for having some of the strictest safeguards and nutrition guidelines for formula, and those baseline standards are further enhanced through organic certification, which subjects a product to even higher levels of scrutiny.
The EU organic logo, recognized as a white and green starry leaf, is proudly bestowed on all of Holle’s formulas and is widely commended for its rigorous demands, which include the following criteria:
At Least 95% Organic Ingredients - The vast majority of ingredients in formula must be sourced from organic origins. As for the small remainder of non-organic ingredients, they typically consist of micronutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, that don’t qualify for organic status.
No Genetically Modified Ingredients - GMOs are strictly prohibited.
No Growth Hormones - Animals are never treated with growth hormones.
Strictly Limited Antibiotic Use - Animals only consume antibiotics when absolutely necessary for their health.
Made Without Artificial Ingredients - Organic formula is free of artificial colors, flavors, aromas, and sweeteners.
Holle Dutch formulas, including both cow and goat’s milk ranges, are also certified organic by AB France, identifiable by its green and white ‘AB’ logo. While AB France's organic certification aligns with the same EU organic requirements, it is the French government that oversees the certification process.
Finally, you may have also noticed a bright orange Demeter label on Holle Bio formula. This private organic certification verifies that a product meets biodynamic principles, which help ensure that more is given back to the environment than is taken out.
You can think of it as ‘organic plus’ because Demeter standards exceed European organic guidelines. For instance, under Demeter regulations, the dehorning of animals is strictly prohibited, which is more humane and helps preserve the nutrients in milk; however, this is not a requirement of EU organic standards.
Beyond their focus on organic nutrition, Holle is also committed to environmental sustainability. To achieve this, they offset the CO2 emissions that occur during formula production, helping to protect babies’ futures. In fact, what sets Holle apart from other European baby formulas on the market is that all of their formulas are either climate-neutral or climate-positive!
Holle uses organic and/or biodynamically grown ingredients for a pure and nourishing formulation.
Holle's formula satisfies the strict requirements of several organic certification bodies.
Holle uses sustainable production methods that protect the earth.
The quality of a formula largely depends on its ingredients, and each brand has its own unique approach to creating its recipes. Holle carefully selects each premium ingredient to mimic the nourishing properties of breast milk, while also maintaining a simple yet comprehensive recipe. Keep reading to discover the ins and outs of Holle formula ingredients.
Holle organic formula is packed with critical nutrients identified as necessary for babies’ health, starting with macronutrients like fat. Dietary fat is a staple during infancy because it contributes to sustaining energy levels, aids in nutrient absorption, and supports the development of the brain, eyes, and nerves. When it comes to baby formula, there are two main sources of fat: whole milk and vegetable oils.
Holle Goat is based on whole milk, which means that all the natural milk fats are retained. Whole milk is beneficial as it delivers a more natural and bioavailable source of fats, reduces the amount of vegetable oils included, is closer to the fatty acid content of human milk, and allows for a palm oil-free recipe.
On the other hand, Holle Cow is based on skim milk, from which the milk fats have been removed. In place of the missing milk fats, Holle cow features a mixture of organic vegetable oils, including sustainably sourced organic palm oil, organic sunflower oil, and organic rapeseed oil.
Carbohydrates are another macronutrient and our body's main source of energy. Just like breast milk, all Holle formulas use organic lactose as the primary carbohydrate, as it’s known to be gentle and easily digestible while also promoting lasting energy in babies. However, from Stage 2 and above, many Holle formulas also include complementary carbohydrates, namely, organic maltodextrin and organic starch. Here, we’ll walk you through the qualities of each of these potential carbohydrate sources.
Lactose is a simple sugar naturally present in milk and one of the main components in human milk. Compared to complex carbohydrates, it is thought to be easier to digest. Beyond serving as a nourishing supply of energy for your baby, research suggests that lactose can help strengthen gut health and support bone growth. Lactose is the only carbohydrate used in all Holle infant formula (this includes Holle Stage 1 or PRE), and all Stages of Holle Goat Global are also entirely based on lactose.
Maltodextrin is a processed form of hydrolyzed starch commonly used as a substitute for lactose in formula that helps improve the consistency of milk. Maltodextrin is more slowly broken down during digestion than simple carbohydrates, which may give your baby a feeling of fullness. All Holle Dutch and German formulas include maltodextrin as an ingredient starting from Stage 2.
Starch is the primary carbohydrate found in plants and is therefore present in foods such as cereals, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. As such, starch becomes a natural component of babies’ diets once they start consuming solid foods. When added to baby formula, starch helps to achieve a creamier, thicker consistency, which many little ones enjoy. Furthermore, it is broken down more slowly during digestion, which may contribute to a feeling of fullness in your baby. From Stage 2 and beyond, mild organic starch is used in Holle Dutch and German formulas.
Essential fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fat that our bodies are unable to generate independently, and therefore we must get it through dietary sources. In accordance with European nutrition guidelines, all Holle formulas include docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to support babies’ cognitive development and vision. However, Holle is unique in that they’ve chosen to use algae-derived DHA as an alternative to the commonplace fish oil. This choice ensures a milder flavor and is also more ecologically sustainable because it avoids the harms of overfishing.
All Holle infant formulas (Stages PRE and 1) also include arachidonic acid (ARA) from Mortierella Alpina oil as a source of omega-6. ARA supports cell function, ensuring a healthy skeletal, nervous, and immune system. While ARA is omitted from Stage 2 and above in Holle Dutch and German formulas, these formulas contain omega-6 fatty acids from other sources, and ARA continues to be present in all Stages of Holle Goat Global.
To ensure your baby’s milk is nutritionally complete, Holle baby formula is fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin D, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid, sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, and potassium chloride, among other important ingredients.
Here are the specific ways these nutritional powerhouses work to support your little one's growth and development:
Vitamin B5: Also known as pantothenic acid, involved in energy production and hormone synthesis.
Vitamin C: Essential immune support, enhances iron absorption, and is involved in collagen production.
Vitamin D: Vital for calcium absorption and bone development.
Vitamin E: Protects cells and supports various bodily functions.
Vitamin K: Crucial for blood clotting and bone health.
Folic Acid: Aids in the production of DNA and RNA and is particularly important for tissues and cells undergoing rapid growth.
Zinc Sulfate: Supports immune function and wound healing.
In conclusion, like many European formulas, Holle sources ingredients from organic or biodynamic farming whenever possible. If you're curious about the specific ingredients of a particular formula, you can find this information on the product page for that formula on our website.
The ingredients left out of an infant formula recipe are equally as important as all the nourishing ingredients put in. Next, we explore the kinds of ingredients Holle ditches when it comes to crafting their organic baby formula to ensure your little one receives all they need to grow up healthy and strong, and nothing that’s unnecessary.
Holle organic formula is meticulously crafted to exclude artificial ingredients and preservatives.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been the subject of concern for many conscious consumers. Holle has made a resolute commitment to being GMO-free, as confirmed by the organic certifications on their formulas.
Holle takes a strong stance against the inclusion of added sugars, such as corn syrup, and relies instead on the natural, mild sweetness of organic lactose to provide a gentle and wholesome source of energy for growing babies.
Every stage of your baby's development is unique, and their nutritional needs continue to evolve as they grow; that’s why Holle offers infant, follow-on, and toddler formula to nourish and support your child every step of the way.
Infant Formula - Holle PRE and Holle Stage 1 are both infant formulas suitable from birth to six months; the key difference is that the energy content of Stage 1 is slightly higher.
Follow-On Formula - There are two different options for follow-on milk depending on the product line: Holle Stage 2 from 6-12 months or Holle Stage 3 from 10-12 months. Both are designed to support the transition of weaning-age infants to a mixed diet.
Toddler Formula - Some families choose to use toddler milk in place of plain whole milk for the added nutrients. While most Holle toddler formula is labelled as Stage 4, in some cases it may be labelled as Stage 3. You can tell that it's specifically for toddlers if it's suitable from 12+ months.
Holle baby formula is available in several milk varieties to cater to different dietary needs and meet parents’ ingredient preferences. There are three different bases of milk that you can choose from:
Skim Cow’s Milk: This is the base for Holle Cow German and Holle Cow Dutch.
Skim A2 Cow’s Milk: This is the base for Holle A2 Cow German
Whole Goat Milk: This is the base for Holle Goat Dutch, German, and Global formulas.
Read on to learn more about what makes each of these formulas unique!
Holle goat milk formula is a popular choice for parents of sensitive babies. This is because formulas based on goat milk are generally more easily digestible than cow's milk formulas. In fact, research suggests that babies can digest goat milk formula approximately twice as fast as cow’s milk formula!
Goat formula tends to be better tolerated by babies because its naturally mild composition leads to the formation of smaller, softer, and looser milk curds in babies’ bellies compared to cow's milk. This characteristic helps tiny tummies digest their goat milk formula more comfortably and easily. Additionally, the proteins found in goat milk are primarily A2, akin to those in breast milk, while the A1 proteins that are more prevalent in cow’s milk can cause discomfort for some little ones.
All in all, goat milk formula is a naturally gentle source of nutrition that can be a great alternative to cow's milk formula, but there are some situations in which it’s not recommended.
For one, goat milk formula is unsuitable for babies with an established or suspected cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) because of the similar protein structure of both kinds of milk, which poses a risk of cross-reaction. Second, because goat milk formula does contain lactose, it’s also not appropriate for babies with lactose intolerance. If your child has special dietary needs, it’s best to consult your pediatrician for guidance.
Holle Goat is available in German, Dutch, and Global varieties, with minor differences between each range. While the composition of Holle Goat Dutch and German is similar, the German lineup is available in a wider range of stages (from Stage PRE to 4). Additionally, Holle formulas are packaged differently; while Holle Goat German comes in 400g boxes, Holle Goat Dutch is offered in 800g metal cans.
As for Holle Goat Global, this range was specially crafted for the international market, and thus its recipe is designed to satisfy a multitude of nutritional regulations. Like the other Holle goat formulas, it’s made with a whole milk base and is palm oil-free. However, uniquely, all stages of Holle Global formula use lactose as the sole carbohydrate source. Moreover, each stage is enriched with both DHA and ARA. This differs from the other Holle formulas, which include complementary carbs starting from Stage 2 and which only offer ARA in Stages PRE and 1. Finally, Holle Goat Global is available in 600g boxes, and all labeling is conveniently written in English.
Holle Goat Milk Formula Stage 1 Lactose-Only Global Version (0-6 Months)
Holle Goat Milk Formula Stage 2 Lactose-Only Global Version (6-12 Months)
Holle Goat Milk Formula Stage 3 Lactose-Only Global Version (12+ Months)
Holle Goat German Stage PRE (0+ months)
Holle Goat German Stage 1 (0-6 months)
Holle Goat German Stage 2 (6-10 months)
Holle Goat German Stage 3 (10+ months)
Holle Goat German Stage 4 (12+ months)
Holle Goat Dutch Stage 1 (0-6 months)
Holle Goat Dutch Stage 2 (6+ months)

Cow’s milk is the go-to choice when it comes to formula feeding for most families. Holle offers two different German cow milk formula lines: Holle Cow and Holle A2 Cow. They also offer Holle Cow Dutch formula, which delivers the same composition as Holle Cow German but in larger cans. Let’s look at the unique features of each Holle cow milk formula further.
Holle Cow German is crafted with simple ingredients, featuring a skim milk base enriched with vegetable oils, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. Lactose serves as the primary source of energy, though Stages 2 and above also include maltodextrin and starch as complementary carbohydrates. All stages contain DHA, but ARA is not present in Stage 2 and above. This formula is offered in 400 and 600g boxes, depending on the stage, and all labels are in German.
Holle Cow German Stage PRE (0+ months)
Holle Cow German Stage 1 (0-6 months)
Holle Cow German Stage 2 (6-10 months)
Holle Cow German Stage 3 (10-12 months)
Holle Cow German Stage 4 (12+ months)
Holle Cow Dutch and German both follow the same recipe and are manufactured in Germany. However, Holle Cow Dutch is offered in fewer stages because it does not include Stage PRE. Another point of difference between the two versions is that Holle Cow Dutch not only holds EU organic certification, but it is also certified organic by AB France. The most noticeable distinction is that Holle Cow Dutch is packaged in larger 800g cans, which are more durable and less messy to scoop from. The labels on the cans are written in both Dutch and French.
Holle Cow Milk Formula Dutch Stage 1 (0-6 months)
Holle Cow Milk Formula Dutch Stage 2 (6+ months)
Holle Cow Milk Formula Dutch Stage 3 (10+ months)
Holle Cow Milk Formula Dutch Stage 4 (12+ months)
Holle’s A2 cow's milk is particularly beneficial for babies with sensitive stomachs. The milk in this range comes from specially selected cows that naturally produce milk containing only A2 beta-casein, making it easier to digest and more closely resembling the protein profile of breast milk. Similar to the German range, Holle A2 formula uses maltodextrin and starch in addition to lactose from Stage 2, while ARA is not included from Stage 2. Holle A2 Cow German is available in 400g boxes, and the labelling is in German.
Holle A2 Cow Milk Stage 1 (0-6 months)
Holle A2 Cow Milk Stage 2 (6-12 months)
Holle A2 Cow Milk Stage 3 (10+ months)
If you’re worried about your little one’s delicate digestive system, Holle organic goat milk formula and Holle A2 cow’s milk formula are both gentle formulas that can help calm tiny tummies. Since both of these options rely exclusively on A2 milk proteins, they don’t release inflammatory peptides associated with A1 milk during digestion. That means they can help minimize the risk of bloating, gas, and indigestion!
Additionally, these Holle formulas offer a closer match to nature’s perfect elixir, breast milk, as they share the same A2 protein structure. However, if you’re on the hunt for the closest formula to breast milk, Holle Goat may be the best formula for you because it’s made with whole goat milk, which retains its natural fats, unlike the skimmed milk used to make Holle A2 Cow. This means Holle Goat is less processed overall, and it offers a similar fatty acid profile to human milk.
Beyond that, Holle Goat may be better suited to babies who are sensitive to cow’s milk, but keep in mind that both formulas are unsuitable for cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA) and lactose intolerance.
Holle organic infant formula is one of the few brands available in Demeter quality, which sets the highest standard for organic certification. We appreciate this commitment to incorporating ingredients from biodynamic farming, which helps protect the planet's well-being, as well as the health and welfare of people and animals. However, even Holle formulas that aren’t Demeter certified still meet strict EU organic regulations.
Ultimately, they’re one of our favorite European formulas because no matter which Holle organic baby formula you opt for, you will find clean, nutritious ingredients designed to mirror the natural components of breast milk.
